Mutinondo Wilderness and the surrounding areas offer endless hiking delights with 120,000 hectares of uninhabited pure African Bush to explore. There are over 60km of tracks within the 10,000 hectare Mutinondo Wilderness Area with spectacular views and sites of interest. Maps and guides are available from the lodge and you can arrange for a mobile camp (see below). If you wish to trek outside the area (to the Luangwa Valley, for example), please contact us in advance so that the appropriate arrangements can be made with the community.
TREKS AND ADVENTURE HOLIDAYS FOR SMALL
GROUPS (maximum 12 people)
There are a variety of treks which we can offer
to suit your interests, for example:
A three to four day walk to the Iron Age
and cycad sites, over the Mayense Hill/large Granite dome, back along the Musamfushi
River to the main camp for a day to relax (riding, swimming and canoeing). Then
another 6 day trek across rocks and wetlands to the Mutinondo River and along
the river and poacher paths (approx 20km) to the spectacular Ceswa and Mutinondo
waterfalls and down the escarpment into the Luangwa Valley.
From there guests have a choice to return by vehicle via the Late Stone Age Nachikufu Caves, or walk back to Mutinondo camp using another scenic route with an optional stay at the "about to built" Community camp on the Great North road to experience some village life.
Plants, birds and evidence of wildlife are pointed out by the local guides who have an abundance of knowledge of the area and its inhabitants.
Places of interest to be visited during the treks include newly found rock paintings, Iron Age workings, cycads in the wild, a hawk eagle's nest (presence permitting), history of the area (movement of people during the tribal invasions etc), old pottery site, introduction to the new Community initiative - a locally managed natural resources reserve. Part of the trek will be in this area and the community will benefit from the business when they have their tracks and guides ready.
![]() | Treks are very flexible and can be tailored for each group depending on its requirements and expectations. A keen group might want walk down the escarpment and be collected at the Mutinondo Crossing or the Chifungwe game Scout camp in the Luangwa Valley and then transferred to a safari lodge in the South Luangwa Nation Park. The Community project is just looking at that route to plan a track for trekkers. Until Chintu Mukulu (community project) is up and running Mutinondo Wilderness will work in partnership with the community to accommodate these treks. The more interest taken in these treks the more backing the community project will get! A mobile camp and kitchen is set up for the trekkers each day. The tents are two man tunnel tents, bedding will be camping mats and sleeping bags. (In the Main Camp trekkers have the option of a chalet). The menu is home cooking and traditional food can be ordered or sampled in the village visit. French speaking guides can be arranged, as some of the villagers have been educated in the Congo. |
OTHER
SUGGESTIONS AND INFO: - Trekkers could get the train to and from Kalonje Railway station; we could offer a vehicle transfer or arrange porters to carry their luggage the 25km to and from main camp.
