Zambia is strewn with a wonderful variety of gemstones but suffers from mistrust and poor marketing and mining practices. Lari is a jeweller and gemmologist and did some consultancy work with the Ministry of Mines trying to improve this situation; she now uses the processes which she promoted.

Appropriate technology stone cutting, jewellery processes and polishing techniques are used to promote and transform some villagers and local small scale miners' produce into unique jewellery enhanced with silver, gold and trade beads or left just how nature created it -as crystals. All are on display and for sale at the lodge.

Examples of Lari's machines at Mutinondo include:
An old treadle Singer sewing machine converted into an efficient (and wonderfully safe and quiet) stone cutting and carving machine.
A small stone tumbler/jewellery polisher run on solar and wind power -and a larger tumbler is being designed to run in the river!

Learn a very rewarding hobby or profession whilst on holiday and book in advance for lessons in:
-jewellery making
-cabachon cutting lessons.
